RUBEN AMORIM HAS REPORTEDLY SENT A BRUTAL WARNING TO MICHAEL CARRICK AFTER AC MILAN’S 4-2 VICTORY OVER MANCHESTER UNITED
The aftermath of Manchester United’s 4-2 pre-season loss to AC Milan in Wrocław has sparked fresh controversy, with former United manager Ruben Amorim reportedly taking aim at his old club and issuing a serious warning to his successor Michael Carrick.
Amorim, who left Old Trafford in January 2026 after a difficult spell in charge, watched his Milan side produce a stunning second-half comeback after United had taken a 2-1 lead. While Carrick was left to deal with another worrying defensive display, Amorim allegedly used the result to revisit some of the problems he experienced during his time at the club.
According to the sensational claim circulating after the match, Amorim allegedly identified one senior United player as a major source of the club’s problems and warned Carrick that failing to remove him could eventually cost the new manager his job.
“Him in that club, they will never succeed. They said I was the problem, now what is the scoreline? My honest advice to Carrick: if you want to succeed, get him out of that club. He’s bad luck. He got me sacked, and if you don’t get rid of him, he will also get you sacked.”
If genuine, the alleged comments would represent an extraordinary assessment from a former United manager about the environment inside the dressing room. Amorim would effectively be suggesting that the problems he encountered at Old Trafford were not solely tactical and that the influence of one individual played a major role in his eventual departure.
The match itself provided plenty of ammunition for those questioning United’s defensive stability. The Red Devils made a perfect start when Harry Maguire headed in from a Bruno Fernandes set-piece just two minutes into the game. Milan responded through Samuel Chukwueze in the 37th minute, but United regained the advantage early after the restart when Patrick Dorgu capitalised on a defensive error to make it 2-1.
From there, however, everything changed.
Milan dramatically turned the contest around between the 57th and 71st minutes. Alphadjo Cissè restored parity in the 57th minute after finding space down United’s flank, before Gonçalo Ramos put Milan ahead with a header following another defensive breakdown. Just three minutes later, Ruben Loftus-Cheek added a fourth with a curling effort to complete a devastating spell for the Italian side.
United’s inability to protect a lead and their defensive collapse after taking control of the game will inevitably raise questions for Carrick ahead of the competitive season.
Although pre-season results are rarely treated as definitive evidence of a team’s quality, conceding four goals in the space of one half will still concern the United coaching staff. Carrick must now decide whether the current squad is capable of fixing those weaknesses or whether reinforcements and difficult personnel decisions are required before the transfer window closes.
The alleged remarks from Amorim have only intensified that debate. If Carrick believes a particular player is contributing to the team’s problems, he may have to make a major decision quickly. On the other hand, accepting Amorim’s assessment without question could allow the former manager’s words to influence decisions that Carrick ultimately needs to make on his own.
The result has also sparked plenty of debate among United supporters, with some believing the defensive collapse proves that several of the issues from Amorim’s reign remain unresolved, while others see the alleged comments as nothing more than an ex-manager attempting to justify his own failure at Old Trafford.
With pre-season now over, Carrick has little time to dwell on the defeat. Attention will immediately turn toward the Premier League campaign, and every team selection, tactical decision and transfer move will face increased scrutiny following the Milan collapse.
Whether Carrick accepts Amorim’s alleged warning or chooses to trust his own judgement remains unknown. What is certain is that the 4-2 defeat has exposed questions United will need to answer quickly, with the new season approaching and very little room for another prolonged period of uncertainty.
