Mauricio Pochettino made three changes to the side that defeated Leicester City less than a fortnight ago, and the team started strongly. Axel Disasi thought he had put the hosts ahead in the first half, but the VAR ruled it out for handball.

However, the Blues were not to be denied, as they took the lead before halftime. After Mykhailo Mudryk was taken down in the box, Lorenz Assignon received a straight red card for the visitors.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was furious with the decision and received a red card for his objections. Cole Palmer dinked the ball from 12 yards to put Chelsea ahead with a typically cool finish.

However, the Clarets levelled early in the second half thanks to a superb strike from the edge of the box by Josh Cullen. However, Chelsea regained the lead later in the game thanks to another Palmer goal.

Burnley equalised immediately after with a Dara O’Shea header from a corner, and the game finished 2-2 despite Chelsea’s man advantage in the second half. Bobby Vincent grades the Chelsea players who appeared.

Djordje Petrovic – Makes a world-class pass to Malo Gusto in the first minute of the game. Shortly after, he made an excellent save to deny Wilson Odobert. Should do better with the O’Shea goal, though. 5.

Malo Gusto – Always positive. Involved in all of the Blues’ successful offensive plays. Unfortunately, he failed to score his first Chelsea goal in the first half. Hopefully, the injury he sustained late on is not too serious. 7.

Axel Disasi thought he had scored and was celebrating, but the VAR had other ideas. He was dependable in the rear when it counted. 6.

Benoit Badiashile is calm on the ball. Won a few aerial duels. Wasn’t particularly involved, which I suppose is a plus for a centre-back. 6.

Marc Cucurella – Unlike his full-back opponent, Cucurella was unable to get involved despite continuously standing high on the pitch. 6.

Enzo Fernandez – Fantastic sliding tackle at 13 minutes. I thought he played well in the first half but faded in the second. 6.

Moises Caicedo – Did okay. His energy is quite astounding. However, he was unable to have a significant impact on the final outcome of the encounter. 6.

Cole Palmer – As bright as ever. It was unfortunate not to score a beautiful goal early on. Was not to be denied shortly before halftime with an outrageous penalty. Constantly involved, adding a second goal after the break. Brilliant. 9.

Conor Gallagher – Too quiet. Wasn’t able to participate nearly as much as he would have liked. 5.

Mykhailo Mudryk appeared active and a nuisance for Burnley. That skill he used early in the game to force a yellow card was outstanding. Should do better with his chance after roughly 35 minutes. But he made up for it with a superb run to force the penalty and a red card just before halftime. 7.

Nicolas Jackson – The striker missed a good chance early on despite some impressive build-up effort. It looked excellent, though. He was continually drawing his teammates into the game through excellent hold-up play. 6.

Substitutes

Noni Madueke came on for the final half-hour of the game. On 67 minutes, he had a half-chance but missed the corner. A decent cameo, but not the expected impact. 6.

Raheem Sterling – Came onto cheers, which was encouraging given the circumstances of two weeks previously. Made an immediate impression with a brilliant flick to Palmer for his second goal. 7.
