Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly expressed serious disappointment following United’s chaotic 3-2 encounter against AS Roma

Manchester United’s remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma has provided some relief at Old Trafford, but concerns surrounding Michael Carrick and his players remain. Despite securing an important Champions League victory, United’s poor start once again exposed weaknesses that have frustrated supporters throughout the season.
Roma took an early advantage through Matías Soulé before Donyell Malen converted a penalty to make it 2-0. United struggled to cope with the visitors’ attacking threat, raising fresh questions about their defensive organisation and overall consistency.
A viral statement circulating online now claims legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was left emotional after watching the performance and personally contacted Carrick to express his disappointment with an unnamed player. The alleged message reportedly included a demand that the individual should not start another match until his performances improve significantly. However, there is no credible confirmation that Ferguson made those comments or contacted the current manager.
Ferguson’s history at Old Trafford makes such claims particularly interesting. During his remarkable reign, he built successful teams featuring legendary figures including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. Those sides were recognised for their discipline, mentality and consistency.
Meanwhile, United eventually found a response against Roma through Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha. Fernandes converted a retaken penalty before Cunha scored twice in the closing stages to complete the comeback. The Brazilian was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Although the victory ended United’s difficult winless run, Carrick still has plenty to address. His defensive setup, team selection and ability to maintain consistency will remain under scrutiny.
The next challenge is turning this memorable comeback into sustained improvement. Manchester United need players who can deliver from the opening whistle, not just produce occasional moments of brilliance when everything appears lost.
