Michael Carrick has delivered a glowing verdict on one Manchester United star following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma

Old Trafford witnessed another unforgettable night as Manchester United produced a dramatic turnaround to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory after struggling to find their rhythm in the opening half. Trailing 2-1 at the break, Michael Carrick’s men looked short of energy and ideas, but one decisive substitution completely changed the complexion of the contest.

Recognising that his team needed a spark, Carrick introduced a fresh option from the bench, and the impact was almost immediate. United suddenly looked more confident, their passing became sharper, and the attacking play that had been missing earlier in the game finally came to life. What appeared to be a difficult evening quickly turned into a memorable comeback, with the decisive goal arriving in the 88th minute.

Speaking after the final whistle, Carrick was full of admiration for the player who made such a difference. The United boss admitted that his team lacked intensity while they were behind, but everything changed when the substitute entered the action.

Carrick explained that the player’s composure, intelligence and ability to influence the team’s overall structure completely transformed the performance. He also made it clear that the contribution was more than just an impressive cameo, suggesting that the display had strengthened the player’s case for a regular starting position.

The tactical difference was evident throughout the second half. United became more adventurous in possession, moved the ball with greater urgency and found better ways to penetrate the opposition’s defensive structure. Their midfield also began to control proceedings, allowing the defenders to push higher up the pitch rather than constantly dealing with pressure.

United’s improvement was reflected in the statistics. Having managed just 42 per cent possession and two shots on target in the first half, they increased those numbers to 64 per cent possession and seven attempts on target after the substitution. More importantly, they found the back of the net twice to complete the turnaround.

The substitute’s influence extended beyond improving the team’s attacking rhythm, as his movement and intelligent positioning created opportunities for others. He played an important role in opening up space for the equaliser before making a decisive contribution to the late winner.

With three valuable points secured in dramatic fashion, Carrick now faces an interesting selection decision ahead of Manchester United’s next fixture. His post-match comments have certainly raised expectations, and it would not be surprising to see the influential substitute rewarded with a place in the starting eleven.
