Breaking: Calvert-Lewin Linked with Manchester United as Fans Fear Another Weghorst Scenario

Manchester United’s ongoing push to strengthen their attack has seen them make significant moves in the transfer window. Matheus Cunha has already arrived at Old Trafford from Wolves in a £62.5 million move, aimed at injecting much-needed energy and goals into the final third.

Alongside Cunha, the club has been pursuing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, with several offers tabled. The Cameroon international is reportedly open to a switch to United under Ruben Amorim, though Brentford’s valuation could still stand in the way of a deal.

Amid these pursuits, United remain desperate to improve their attacking options after scoring just 44 Premier League goals last season. Names like Victor Osimhen, Dušan Vlahović, and Moise Kean have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but none have materialized so far.

Now, a surprising new candidate has emerged. According to The Sun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being considered as a potential addition. The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after parting ways with Everton, and reports suggest United have already reached out to his representatives. Amorim is said to be a fan of the striker and may be open to bringing him in.

However, the idea of signing Calvert-Lewin is raising eyebrows among supporters and pundits alike. Many fear a repeat of the Wout Weghorst experiment from the 2022/23 season. The Dutchman, signed on loan to add depth, managed just two goals in 31 appearances and failed to convince.

There are striking similarities between Calvert-Lewin and Weghorst. Both are tall, traditional centre-forwards with strong aerial ability, but their recent records are less than inspiring. Calvert-Lewin’s standout campaign came in 2020/21 when he scored 21 goals in all competitions. Since then, he has found the net only 18 times across four seasons — a sharp decline for someone once compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by his former teammate Richarlison.

Worse still, the Englishman’s career has been hampered by persistent injuries, limiting his availability and consistency. He has only completed more than 30 appearances once in the past four years and has missed nearly 50 games due to various fitness issues.

Signing him would also come at a financial cost. At Everton, Calvert-Lewin reportedly earned around £100,000 per week — a figure he may expect to maintain. That kind of wage, for a player with questionable durability and declining productivity, makes the potential transfer even riskier.

While United’s need for another striker is clear, especially if they want to challenge in the 2025/26 season, Calvert-Lewin doesn’t appear to be the long-term answer. This move would echo the short-term thinking that led to Weghorst’s failed stint. Instead, United should be pursuing players who are younger, fitter, and better aligned with Amorim’s tactical vision — names like Vlahović, Osimhen, Zirkzee, or even wide attackers like Mbeumo and Lookman.

Chasing Calvert-Lewin may feel like a quick fix, but it’s the kind of move that signals desperation, not strategy. If Manchester United are serious about rebuilding with purpose, this isn’t the direction to take.
