Howard Webb admits a major VAR mistake against Manchester United as refereeing officials face consequences following the controversial Manchester derby defeat

Manchester United’s 2–0 defeat to Chelsea has continued to generate controversy, with supporters questioning several refereeing decisions that affected Michael Carrick’s side at Stamford Bridge.

The biggest talking point was Lisandro Martínez’s second-half dismissal following an aerial challenge involving Chelsea defender Jorrel Hato. The decision angered United players and supporters, while the penalty awarded afterwards allowed Cole Palmer to extend Chelsea’s advantage.

Attention has since shifted towards Howard Webb, PGMOL’s chief refereeing officer, who oversees professional match officials in English football.

Claims circulating online suggest Webb has admitted that two important decisions went against United and ordered the fixture to be replayed during the international break. However, there is no credible confirmation of such an announcement, and no official replay has been ordered.

Even when referees make significant mistakes, matches are not automatically replayed. Football regulations generally allow results to stand, with disciplinary action, internal reviews or explanations serving as the usual response to officiating errors.

United can seek clarification over controversial decisions, but that does not guarantee a change to the result.

Meanwhile, Carrick must address the team’s disappointing performances and growing pressure following another defeat. Although the refereeing controversy deserves proper examination, United’s defensive weaknesses and poor results cannot be ignored.
