Mikel Arteta is set to hijack Newcastle United’s approach for Ruben Neves as Mikel Arteta aims to bolster his midfield.

And, because both Newcastle and Neves’ Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal are owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, a loan would be impossible.

According to the story, Edu Gaspar has long admired Neves, who has previously been linked with Arsenal.

Arsenal appear to be becoming increasingly conscious that they will be unable to rely on Thomas Partey in the future.

Despite his brilliance, Partey is hurt far too frequently.

With existing links to Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, who would be a very logical addition, Arsenal clearly has options.

Either Luiz or Neves, who have similar profiles, would be a big addition to Arsenal’s midfield, which is in desperate need of talent.

It would be thrilling for Arsenal fans to see Neves back in the Premier League at the Emirates, since many believe he has unfinished business.

And, at 26 years old, the Portuguese international has plenty of good years ahead of him.

The biggest hurdle for Arsenal would be if Newcastle were to pursue a permanent move for the midfielder themselves.

However, the club, like Arsenal, will be cognizant of their FFP limits in the coming window.

If ‘iconic’ Neves is willing to leave his new club, there is undoubtedly a huge chance for all elite clubs around Europe, but it will undoubtedly come at a cost.

It remains to be seen how active Arsenal will be in January, after a summer of systematic business.

However, if Neves is perceived to be worth £45 million, Arteta and Arsenal may find the offer too good to pass up.
