Manchester United are set to prioritise signing a new striker in the upcoming transfer window following a disappointing season from Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish forward has only scored three goals in the Premier League and has failed to make a consistent impact, falling short of the club’s expectations after his high-profile arrival. Head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly unconvinced by Hojlund’s fit in his tactical system and could be looking to move him on this summer.
Initially, Amorim was keen on bringing Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford, but the Swedish striker is determined to join a club that can offer Champions League football, something United might not be able to guarantee next season. With that avenue closing, attention swiftly turned to Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian star has emerged as United’s leading target, and despite earlier concerns over his high wage demands, recent developments suggest a major breakthrough.
According to Turkish journalist Serdar Ali Çelikler, Osimhen has reached an agreement on personal terms with Manchester United. The final step now lies in negotiations with Napoli over the transfer fee. Although Osimhen’s release clause is set at €75 million, reports suggest Napoli may be open to a slightly reduced price, especially if the deal includes structured bonuses or player exchanges. Juventus have also shown interest, but Napoli are reluctant to sell to a domestic rival, handing United a favourable position in the race.
Despite currently being on loan at Galatasaray, where he has impressed, scoring 29 goals and registering 6 assists in 34 games across all competitions, Osimhen is unlikely to remain in Turkey. Galatasaray simply cannot compete with the financial muscle United bring to the table. With Chelsea pulling out of the race due to financial constraints and squad planning issues, and Osimhen not prioritising offers from Saudi clubs, United now appear to be in pole position.
Still, Manchester United are not putting all their eggs in one basket. Should the Osimhen deal fall through, the club is also monitoring other potential options. Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace is on their radar following a strong end to the season under Oliver Glasner. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s young forward Liam Delap, who impressed during a loan spell at Hull City, is also being considered as a long-term project.
If the Osimhen deal materialises, it would represent a significant shift in United’s attack. Hojlund could be sent to Napoli on loan as part of the arrangement, and the frontline would likely be rebuilt around Osimhen. The club envisions a dynamic offensive setup featuring Osimhen at the tip, supported by talents like Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Michael Olise, Jadon Sancho, or Amad Diallo, with a midfield anchored by Kobbie Mainoo and possibly one of United’s summer midfield targets like Manuel Ugarte or João Neves.
