Mauricio Pochettino’s first season at Chelsea has had an up and down start. With some incredible highs – a 4-1 win over rivals Tottenham and a 4-4 draw against Manchester City stand out – and some low-lows, including their most recent game against Newcastle United, they’ve looked like a team still finding their feet.
While some may be concerned as we approach the midway point, a miraculous reversal was never going to be in the cards for this project that the Argentinian has taken over. Following the dramatic 12th-place finish last season, supporters are already unduly blaming the players and personnel for one poor result.
Some are advocating for further investment in January, into a club that has already received £1 billion in funding. Whether Pochettino requires it or not is unclear, but if he is to bring in players, he will need to create room – and cash – to do so. With that said, here are five players who could depart Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window…
Chalobah Trevoh
Trevoh Chalobah has yet to play this season after sustaining an injury late in preseason, and despite the Blues’ astonishingly terrible defensive performances so far this season, he may struggle to get back into the starting lineup at Chelsea.
Even though reports about his injuries have persisted for months, links to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have dwindled in recent weeks until the star can prove his fitness. He might stay and try to force his way back in after the holidays, but he could also go in January if the appropriate deal comes in, with the Blues apparently asking for £25 million.
Sarr Malang
Malang Sarr, a player so far down the pecking order that Mauricio Pochettino forgot he even existed, has gone down as one of Chelsea’s worst ever purchases, having played just eight Premier League games in his last four years with the club.
Although he appeared to be an impressive defensive signing from Nice in 2020, it never really worked out for the star at Stamford Bridge. He spent last season on loan at AS Monaco in Ligue 1 but returned to Chelsea this summer after the club failed to find him a suitable replacement.
Maatsen, Ian
When it comes to his future with the Blues, the Dutch star hasn’t left much to the imagination. He almost left in the summer in a return transfer to Burnley, where he spent the entire season developing his trade under Vincent Kompany, but he turned down a £30 million offer from Chelsea in order to compete for a spot in Pochettino’s side.
He appeared to be well on his way to securing that spot following a superb preseason in the United States, but he’s only played 106 Premier League minutes in seven cameo appearances, five of which have been 13 minutes or less.
During the international break, the teenager discussed his future with the club, telling Dutch publication AD: “I still think it’s possible to play more at Chelsea.” Accepting [you won’t play] is difficult since you always want more as a young guy.
“I gain confidence from the manager’s words and am prepared when the opportunity presents itself.” In the meanwhile, I must keep all alternatives open. Perhaps I’ll have to make a difficult decision later on, but Chelsea will also inform me.”
More recent speculations suggest the star may sign a new contract and then be loaned out in January, but he’s unlikely to want to become just another cog in the massive Chelsea loan machine that Blues fans and rival fans have grown to know over the years.
Mr. Armando Broja
Armando Broja has been a silently hot commodity on the transfer market since his return from a devastating ACL injury last season, when he scored in just 19 minutes against Fulham. The 22-year-old is a target for both the Cottagers and West Ham, who have been outspoken about their interest in the star.
Despite Mauricio Pochettino’s plaudits during the season, it’s possible the Albanian international will leave Stamford Bridge, with the Blues apparently asking £30 million for his head. With Nicolas Jackson still ahead of him and many pushing for more established offensive options to be available to Pochettino, it’s feasible Broja will be moved on through no fault of his own.
Madueke, Noni
After joining the Blues for £30 million in January of this year, it’s probable that a year later, with the addition of Cole Palmer to the squad, he’ll go on loan. Despite some good performances for the Young Lions in recent months, the former PSV Eindhoven star has virtually been pushed to the sidelines by his compatriot.
He has played just three minutes in Chelsea’s previous three league matches, and his only meaningful run-outs have come in the Carabao Cup, where he scored the equaliser against AFC Wimbledon in the second round from the penalty spot, but has not received any more gametime.
