Manchester United have shown a significant interest in Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee as they seek a backup for their promising star, Rasmus Hojlund, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth in a report by GIVEMESPORT.
Sheth notes that United aim to nurture Hojlund’s development without hindrance and are therefore considering adding a different type of striker to their squad this summer.
Zirkzee, characterized as ‘tall, strong, and imposing,’ offers a distinct skill set compared to Hojlund, who excels in counter-attacks and has notable speed. Hojlund, who arrived from Atalanta a year ago, made an impression by scoring 10 goals in 30 matches during his debut season under manager Erik ten Hag.
Following Anthony Martial’s departure on a free transfer after another injury-plagued season with just 13 league appearances, United are eager to reinforce their forward line. Sheth mentions that United are evaluating several striker options, but Zirkzee stands out:
“They are exploring multiple players for that role, along with other positions they seek to bolster. But Joshua Zirkzee is particularly intriguing to them. He’s a forward from Bologna and is currently with the Netherlands at Euro 2024, still a young talent.”
Sheth also points out that United’s interest in Zirkzee stems from a desire to not overly disrupt Hojlund’s progression.
Zirkzee, who has a £34 million release clause, is also attracting attention from Milan, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, are currently leading the chase for the Netherlands international. The 23-year-old had a standout season with Bologna, helping them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history by scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 34 Serie A matches.
On another note, Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho’s situation remains complex, as journalist Dean Jones reports. Juventus, interested in acquiring Sancho, are hesitant due to United’s transfer fee demands and Sancho’s wages. The 24-year-old is set to leave the club permanently this summer following confirmation that Erik ten Hag will continue as manager, which leaves Sancho without a place in the first-team squad. After a fallout with Ten Hag, Sancho had to train alone last season before being loaned to Borussia Dortmund.
