Roy Keane has reportedly questioned Michael Carrick’s team selection

Manchester United’s 4–4 draw with Aston Villa has sparked fresh debate over Michael Carrick’s decisions, particularly his failure to give teenage winger Shea Lacey any minutes despite the youngster’s impressive display against Roma.

The 19-year-old had provided the assist for Matheus Cunha’s winner in United’s 3–2 comeback victory earlier in the week, raising hopes that he would be rewarded with an opportunity against Villa. However, Carrick kept him on the bench for the entire contest.

Former United captain Roy Keane has reportedly been associated with criticism of the decision, although the dramatic comments circulating online remain unverified.

United’s attacking performance offered plenty of reasons for frustration. After conceding twice inside four minutes through Alysson and Nicolas Jackson, Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans helped restore parity before the break.

Villa regained control in the second half through John McGinn and Leon Goretzka, leaving United trailing 4–2. Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu eventually rescued a point with late goals, but questions remain over why Lacey was overlooked.

The youngster offers creativity, confidence and direct attacking ability, qualities United could have benefited from. Although he still needs time to develop, Carrick must find opportunities to involve him.

United remain 18th, and their defensive struggles continue to increase the pressure on the manager.
