Elon Musk has reportedly set his sights on a sensational takeover of Manchester United

Manchester United could become the centre of a major football ownership story following claims that billionaire businessman Elon Musk is considering an £8 billion takeover bid for the club in 2027.
The rumoured proposal suggests Musk wants complete ownership rather than a minority investment, potentially bringing an end to the Glazer family’s control of the club. He is also alleged to be unhappy with the current ownership structure and believes United deserves a fresh direction.
A statement circulating online attributes ambitious comments to Musk, claiming he wants to restore the club to the top of European football and has already made arrangements to discuss a possible acquisition. However, there is no verified evidence that he has contacted the Glazers, organised a meeting or prepared an official bid.
United’s ownership has remained a sensitive subject since the Glazers completed their leveraged takeover in 2005. Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS acquired a minority stake in 2024 and assumed responsibility for football operations, the American family retained control of the club.
A complete takeover would therefore represent a significant change. Any potential new owner would also face major responsibilities, including improving the squad, addressing Old Trafford’s future, strengthening recruitment and restoring consistent success.
Musk’s alleged interest has generated excitement among supporters, but financial power alone cannot guarantee trophies. For now, the £8 billion takeover story remains unconfirmed, with no official announcement establishing that negotiations are underway.
