Michael Carrick has reportedly expressed serious frustration with one Manchester United defender following a disastrous first-half performance against Roma

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reportedly delivered a brutal assessment of one of his defenders after a disastrous first-half performance against Roma, with the manager allegedly losing patience before the interval.

United found themselves two goals behind following a chaotic opening period in which their defensive organisation completely fell apart. Carrick responded by making an early substitution, withdrawing the struggling defender around the 41st minute rather than allowing him to continue into the second half.

However, the alleged criticism did not end with the substitution. During his post-match press conference, Carrick was reportedly furious as he explained why he had taken such drastic action.

“I couldn’t watch it anymore. Leaving him out there would have been negligence to Manchester United,” he allegedly said.

He reportedly criticised the player’s positioning, decision-making and inability to cope with the pressure, particularly after a costly challenge inside the penalty area handed Roma a spot-kick. Carrick was also alleged to have warned the defender that he would not feature again this season if he could not handle the demands of playing for United in Europe.

The defensive problems extended beyond one individual, with United repeatedly losing their shape, surrendering possession in dangerous areas and struggling against Roma’s pressing. Their inability to win important duels only made matters worse.

Carrick’s alleged reaction sends a strong message about the standards he expects from his players. It suggests that reputation and status will not protect anyone whose performances fall below the level required at Old Trafford.

The incident has also raised questions about how the rest of the squad will respond to such a hard-line approach. If the reported comments are genuine, Carrick appears determined to make accountability a major part of his management.

At Manchester United, nobody can afford to take their place for granted.
