Robson Backs Maguire for England’s World Cup Squad
Manchester United icon Bryan Robson has included Harry Maguire in his ideal England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pointing to the defender’s recent resurgence as justification for his selection.
Maguire has been one of United’s standout performers of late, starting every match under caretaker boss Michael Carrick. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a player who appeared to be heading for the exit door in the summer of 2023, having lost the captaincy and fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag. He gradually forced his way back into contention and became a regular fixture in the starting lineup following Ruben Amorim’s appointment, operating as the central defender in the Portuguese coach’s 3-4-3 setup — though Maguire has since admitted a preference for playing in a back four. Carrick’s arrival and United’s switch back to a four-man defence has suited him perfectly, and the team has responded with an impressive run of results.
A Defensive Cornerstone
With both Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez spending significant time on the treatment table this season, Maguire’s availability and consistency have proven invaluable. He has contributed two goals and an assist across 20 appearances in all competitions.
His good form has not gone unnoticed at international level either, earning him a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad during the current break. However, Tuchel has been cautious about Maguire’s World Cup prospects, suggesting he is no longer considered a guaranteed starter for the national side.
Robson disagrees. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the United legend laid out his preferred England squad for North America this summer and made a point of including Maguire among his defenders. He argued that the centre-back’s tournament experience, aerial presence at set pieces, and ability to read the game make him a valuable asset, and noted that players like Marc Guehi provide the pace to complement him should the situation demand it.
It’s worth noting that Maguire did pick up a straight red card in United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and will sit out the upcoming league clash with Leeds. His contract also runs out at the end of the season, though he has indicated that renewal discussions are already underway.
Mainoo Misses Out
Robson’s proposed squad had no room for Kobbie Mainoo, a decision he attributed to the midfielder’s injury-interrupted campaign. Despite acknowledging it was hard on the 20-year-old, Robson felt the time missed was too significant to overlook — while leaving the door open for Tuchel to reach a different conclusion.
Mainoo had a difficult first half of the season under Amorim but has since become one of Carrick’s most important players. Reports suggest he is now in line for a new contract at Old Trafford, reflecting just how much his stock has risen in recent months.
