Kobbie Mainoo has officially committed his long-term future to Manchester United after signing a fresh five-year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.
The talented academy graduate had been approaching the final year of his previous deal, but the club has now secured his services with improved terms, including a major salary increase. The new agreement also puts an end to recent rumours surrounding his future.
Earlier speculation suggested the 21-year-old could leave after struggling for regular opportunities under former manager Ruben Amorim. Serie A side Napoli were reportedly interested, while Chelsea were also said to be monitoring the midfielder’s situation.
However, Mainoo has since regained an important role in the team under Michael Carrick and has now chosen to continue his journey with the club where it all began.
Reacting after signing the extension, Mainoo said Manchester United has always felt like home and holds special meaning for both him and his family.
He explained that growing up around the club made him understand its importance to the city, adding that wearing the shirt comes with responsibility he proudly embraces.
Mainoo reflected on his progress through the youth system, from The Cliff to Littleton Road, then Carrington and finally Old Trafford. He described the journey as incredible and said he still carries the same hunger and determination he had when joining the club at six years old.
The midfielder also spoke of the positive atmosphere building around the team and said he is eager to help United compete consistently for the biggest trophies in the coming years.
Manchester United Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised Mainoo highly, describing him as one of the most naturally gifted young players in world football.
Wilcox highlighted his technical quality, professionalism and humble character, saying he sets a strong example for younger players and represents the success of the club’s academy system.
He added that United are delighted to have secured Mainoo’s future and believe he can develop into one of the world’s top midfielders while playing a key role in a side aiming for major honours.
Kobbie Mainoo made his senior debut during the 2022/23 season in a Carabao Cup match against Charlton Athletic. Since then, he has gone on to make 98 appearances for the club and score seven goals.
Several of those strikes have come in key moments, including a dramatic late equaliser against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League before Harry Maguire scored the winner moments later.
He also netted a stoppage-time winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a thrilling 4-3 victory, while perhaps his most memorable goal remains the one he scored against Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup Final.
