When Raphael Varane’s deal ends this summer, Manchester United is ready to let him go for free.

Varane joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2021 on a deal that includes a one-year option that, if exercised, would keep him at the club until the summer of 2025. It has since come to light, though, that the top people at United don’t really want to use the extra year.

Varane makes a lot of money for United, and if he left, a lot of additional money would be available. According to ESPN, forward Anthony Martial will likely enjoy the same outcome as his fellow Frenchman and be free to leave the club.

It’s very important for United to get rid of the pay bills of the people who run the show so that money can be made available for possible new players. Although it’s not clear if Varane will be that hurt by not wanting to stay longer, there were rumors earlier this year that he wasn’t happy with how unstable things were at Old Trafford.

The Manchester Evening News said in January that Varane felt like he was being pushed out of the club because United was open about wanting to get the World Cup winner to sign a new deal with much lower pay.

On the eve of the new year, United great Gary Neville made it very clear how he felt about the rumors that the club was trying to keep Varane. That made him nervous: “If United want to renew [Victor] Lindelof and Varane (on shorter terms),” he wrote on social media.

“We need to start over as much as possible.” Even though these two players aren’t terrible, the club needs to make it clear to everyone inside and outside of it that it won’t stand for the behavior of the last few years.

TALK ABOUT IT! Should United try to get Varane to stay for another year? Answer below.

Erik ten Hag is likely to be in charge of a number of big exits this summer.

Not only is Varane leaving United, but so is another well-known player. Christian Eriksen will be able to leave for a small fee, and Lindelof is also expected to leave at the end of the season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay, and Harry Maguire are all free agents in 2025. United, on the other hand, has less than a week to try to sell any of those three players before they can leave for free.
