The Magpies are hoping to reach Manchester City in the top four by May, and they are eager to sign the England international to bolster their UEFA Champions League chances.
As injuries have taken their toll on Newcastle, Eddie Howe has overseen a run of only one win in seven games, and talkSPORT now believes a loan deal involving Phillips has been agreed.
Newcastle are interested in replacing the suspended Sandro Tonali, but lack the funds to recruit the Manchester City No.4 on a permanent basis in January.
The Citizens, however, have no plans to stop the £150,000-a-week man from heading to Tyneside on loan, and with the Telegraph reporting that Newcastle are confident of reaching an agreement, this one appears certain to happen in January.
Phillips was once again kept on the bench as Manchester City defeated Everton 3-1 on Wednesday, after Guardiola previously stated that the 28-year-old occasionally struggles to adapt to his tactical ideas.
Manchester City may also conduct business with Juventus.
Newcastle isn’t the only team interested in Phillips.
According to TalkSPORT, Juventus are also interested, and the Yorkshireman has stated that he would be glad to join the Italian giants.
That would, of course, ensure Phillips did not end up bolstering a Premier League opponent, which Manchester City may desire.
Having said that, if the loan goes well, Newcastle will be more likely to meet the estimated £40m asking price in the summer, whereas Juventus may haggle due to the financial discrepancy between Serie A and the Premier League.
