Mauricio Pochettino, head coach of Chelsea, has issued a strong warning to Mykhailo Mudryk, claiming that his player ‘has to develop’ and is’still not at his best’.

Mudryk scored in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, but was substituted on 66 minutes by Pochettino’s substitution of Nicolas Jackson.

Despite his goal, Pochettino expects much more from the 22-year-old Ukrainian international, who joined Chelsea in January for £88.5 million.

When asked if Mudryk’s substitution was due to his ‘running out of steam’, Pochettino responded in his post-match press conference, ‘No.

He played well, but he still needs to develop. He is still not at his best in my opinion.

‘I felt we needed to make a change to inject a little bit more pressure with Jackson in front of us.

‘We produced a couple chances in that situation, and the game was closer to 3-0 than 2-1.’

Meanwhile, Pochettino praised Cole Palmer while speaking more broadly about Chelsea’s 1-1 tie with Arsenal.

‘I think we lost two points,’ said the Argentine coach to the BBC. ‘We are disappointed, but you cannot change the game’s analysis and judgement.

‘Last season, we were quite competitive against a very excellent squad battling for the Premier League.

‘We are a young team, and I think the manner we competed is something to be proud of, but we’re unhappy because I think we were better after 77 minutes when we conceded the first goal.

‘The game was under control, and we were dominating it. However, when you admit there is a risk.

‘We are disappointed, but we must look on the bright side.

‘I don’t want to see my guys upset because they dropped two points.

‘We’re on the right track. It is critical that we demonstrate to the public that we are capable of competing at this level.

‘[Cole Palmer] is a fantastic player. He is young, yet he is eager to learn. He demonstrated his strong personality.’
