Martin Odegaard, Arsenal’s captain, has established himself as one of the world’s top midfielders in recent years.
The Gunners captain has thrived as the right-sided number eight in Mikel Arteta’s system, routinely finding the back of the net. Since the start of the 2022/23 season, only five players have scored more non-penalty Premier League goals than Odegaard.
These figures are even more amazing when you realize that all five of those players are forwards, while the Norwegian international is primarily a midfielder. The former Real Madrid playmaker has scored 16 non-penalty league goals in the last 12 months, the most recent coming on Sunday in his team’s 3-1 win over Manchester United.
To put things in perspective, United’s creative wizard Bruno Fernandes has scored six non-penalty goals in the same time frame, ten fewer than Odegaard, making Kevin De Bruyne’s recent ranking of the two players even more perplexing. When asked to rate Fernandes, Odegaard, and Tottenham’s James Maddison, the Manchester City player ranked Fernandes first, Odegaard second, and Maddison third.
“I think he’s a creative machine, just in general,” De Bruyne said of Fernandes, according to Sky Sports. “I think Odegaard is very creative, but he’s a little more controlled; Maddison is very creative, but I need to see more of him in a large team to see if that changes.” That’s why I ranked him third.”
When questioned why he ranked United’s star higher than Arsenal’s captain, he replied, “He’s been doing it for a long time.” Odegaard was fantastic last year, but he’s younger, so there’s a difference.”
Garth Crooks, a former Tottenham Hotspur player, made sure to give Odegaard his flowers following the Gunners’ aforementioned triumph over the Red Devils, adding him to his Premier League team of the week. Crooks wrote for the BBC, “His equalizer 35 seconds after Manchester United took the lead was a lifesaver for Arsenal.”
