The Brazilian was collided with by Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff and his teammate, Kyle Walker, after the former scored what he thought was the game’s first goal, only to have it thrown out for offside.
The goal was made possible by a long pass over the top from the home defence, which Aleksandar Isak ran onto against City’s high line.
Despite the fact that Isak was offside, the linesman’s flag remained down, as is the standard rule in the Premier League, and was only lifted once the ball had gone into the net.
Ederson, on the other hand, was the one who suffered. He was forced to leave after treatment, and Stefan Ortega took his place.
‘Do you know what I hope he’s OK and fit enough to recover from?’ remarked Ally McCoist, who was on co-commentary for TNT Sports throughout the game. ‘It’s a bother. That does not happen if the flag is raised. It was clearly offside, in my opinion.
‘You can see Longstaff timed his run properly, and it’s the follow through that’s the problem. He’s fortunate that his left knee doesn’t catch him. It could have gone far worse. We’ve seen it happen several times. It’s been mentioned previously. I think it’s obvious offside, and he needs to raise his flag.’
‘I understand he’s been advised not to. We don’t always get it back, but it occurred to me when the ball was played through. ‘I thought it was apparent.’
City are already without John Stones owing to a similar occurrence earlier this season, when the defender was hurt while playing against Everton despite the game being stopped moments later.

McCoist asked for the rule to be changed, while Darren Fletcher, the game’s primary commentator, emphasised the importance of player safety.
Ederson attempted to play on but was quickly dispossessed, prompting Rodri to request a substitute and the City custodian to collapse again.
‘It’s unmistakably evident,’ McCoist added. ‘It’s clear that he hasn’t recovered in any way. He needs to leave.
‘The one thing you have to say is that if I were Nathan Ake, I’m not sure I’d give him the ball. He didn’t appear to be in good health. They got away with it that time.
