TEN HAG REPORTEDLY DISAPPOINTED AS MANCHESTER UNITED SOLD McTOMINAY AGAINST HIS WISHES

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reignited discussions about Scott McTominay’s departure from Old Trafford, raising fresh questions about the club’s decision to sell the academy graduate in 2024.

McTominay spent years representing United, earning recognition for his commitment, physical presence and ability to score important goals. Although he was not always a regular starter, the Scottish international frequently delivered when his team needed him, making his departure difficult for some supporters to accept.

Reports suggest Ten Hag wanted to retain the midfielder, although the exact wording of the circulating quotation requires independent verification. The situation has renewed debate about whether United’s financial priorities sometimes outweigh their manager’s sporting preferences.

United eventually sold McTominay to Napoli in August 2024, with the transfer also helping the club manage its financial position. At the time, questions remained about his long-term role and whether he could secure regular playing opportunities.

However, his move to Italy transformed his reputation. McTominay became a key figure in Napoli’s midfield, contributing goals and energy as the club won the 2024/25 Serie A title. His outstanding performances also earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

His success has strengthened arguments that United may have underestimated his qualities. Others maintain that the transfer made sense given the club’s rebuilding plans and financial considerations.

McTominay’s achievements in Italy have left United supporters debating whether selling him was the right decision or a costly mistake.
