Michael Carrick makes HUGE transfer decision after Manchester United agree £65m deal for Carlos Baleba
Manchester United’s summer transfer plans are beginning to take a dramatic turn, with Carlos Baleba potentially becoming the signing that completely reshapes Michael Carrick’s midfield.
The Red Devils have already made significant changes in the centre of the pitch, adding Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow to the squad. Tielemans reportedly arrived from Aston Villa for around £35 million, while Santos joined from Chelsea for an initial fee believed to be close to £48 million.
However, the biggest development has been the breakthrough in the pursuit of Baleba. United have reportedly reached an agreement with Brighton for an initial £65 million, with the deal potentially rising to £70 million through bonuses. The Cameroon international is now expected to complete his medical before officially becoming a United player.
If everything goes through, Carrick will have a significantly different midfield at his disposal.
Baleba could bring several qualities that United have lacked in the middle of the park, including strength, pace, defensive intensity and the ability to drive forward with the ball. His presence could give Carrick a reliable option in the No. 6 position while allowing Tielemans and Santos to play with more attacking freedom.
The combination also offers an intriguing balance. Tielemans provides experience, calmness and excellent distribution, while Santos adds energy and movement. Baleba, meanwhile, could supply the physical power and defensive security required to hold everything together.
But there is still one major question surrounding United’s transfer plans: should they stop there?
Probably not.
United have also been linked with reinforcements at left-back, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall previously emerging as potential targets. Strengthening that position could become the club’s next priority as they prepare for the demands of a long Premier League season alongside European competition.
Baleba could give Carrick the midfield foundation he has been looking for, but there are still areas of the squad that could benefit from another high-quality addition. The manager has repeatedly highlighted the importance of building a strong spine and maintaining balance throughout the team.
For United supporters, there is plenty to be excited about. A midfield featuring Baleba, Santos and Tielemans alongside the club’s existing options would suddenly possess much more strength, versatility and competition.
