Carlos Baleba’s first start against Atlético Madrid has sparked excitement despite United’s painful 2-0 defeat

Manchester United may have suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid, but Carlos Baleba’s first start for the club has given fans something positive to take away from a disappointing night.
The Cameroonian midfielder featured from the beginning in Tuesday’s Champions League encounter, and although the result did not go United’s way, his performance offered encouraging signs for Michael Carrick.
Pablo Barrios stunned United with a goal inside the opening minute, leaving Carrick’s men chasing the game from the start. Things got even worse when Leny Yoro received a red card, allowing Ademola Lookman to score Atlético’s second and put the result beyond doubt.
However, Baleba’s display provided a few reasons for optimism amid the disappointment.
Manchester United brought the former Brighton midfielder to the club because they needed more energy, strength and athleticism in the middle of the pitch. Those qualities could prove crucial for a team that has struggled to find the right balance between attacking and defending.
Against Atlético, Baleba showed glimpses of what he could offer. He competed well physically, worked hard to influence the midfield battle and looked for opportunities to contribute in the final third. He even came close to scoring his first goal for United with a header from a Bruno Fernandes corner, only for Jan Oblak to deny him.
Although it was not a flawless performance, there were enough encouraging moments to suggest that Baleba could become an important figure as he settles into his new surroundings.
United supporters have been waiting for a midfielder who can bring greater intensity, win physical battles and help the team regain control when opponents apply pressure. Too often, the Red Devils have struggled to protect their defence when committing players forward, leaving dangerous spaces for opposition teams to exploit.
Baleba’s mobility, strength and willingness to fight for possession could help address some of those weaknesses. His arrival will not magically solve United’s midfield problems, but it gives Carrick another option as he searches for a combination capable of delivering greater stability and control.
The biggest challenge for Baleba now is maintaining consistency. Showing promise in one game is encouraging, but establishing himself at Manchester United requires strong performances against different opponents throughout a demanding season.
Another major question is whether he deserves a regular starting place. With Kobbie Mainoo, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans also competing for midfield positions, Carrick must identify the partnership that provides the best mixture of creativity, defensive discipline and physical presence.
Baleba could prove particularly effective alongside a technically gifted midfielder who can dictate possession and progress the ball. His ability to cover ground and compete in challenges could provide the balance United have been missing.
Nevertheless, individual quality alone will not guarantee success. The midfielders must develop an understanding of one another, maintain their positions and work together to prevent opponents from exploiting spaces between the lines.
If Baleba continues to demonstrate his strengths, he could make a compelling case for a permanent place in Carrick’s starting XI.
Despite the encouraging signs, United cannot allow his performance to distract from the wider problems exposed by the defeat in Madrid. Conceding almost immediately put them under unnecessary pressure, while Yoro’s dismissal made an already difficult task even harder.
United also struggled to turn their opportunities into goals, whereas Atlético proved more clinical when their chances arrived.
These are problems that Baleba cannot fix on his own. United need better concentration from the opening whistle, improved defensive organisation and greater composure in crucial moments. Their midfielders must also work collectively to protect the defence and help the team control matches more effectively.
Carrick has a responsibility to create the right conditions for Baleba to develop without placing the entire burden of United’s improvement on his shoulders.
Nevertheless, there is reason for optimism. Baleba possesses several of the qualities Manchester United have been searching for, and his first start against Atlético offered a glimpse of why he could become a valuable addition to the squad.
The real test is whether he can turn those promising moments into consistent performances, establish a strong partnership with Mainoo or another midfielder, and help make United a more competitive side.
One disappointing result should not define his time at Old Trafford, just as one encouraging performance should not lead to unrealistic expectations.
THE BIG QUESTION IS WHETHER BALEBA CAN BECOME THE MIDFIELD GENERAL UNITED HAVE BEEN MISSING!
