Chelsea Fans Have Every Right to Laugh After Manchester United’s Hull City Nightmare

Manchester United endured a nightmare start to their Premier League campaign after newly promoted Hull City shocked Michael Carrick’s side with a 2-0 victory. Returning to the top flight for the first time in nine years, Hull wasted no time making their presence felt by securing one of the standout results of the opening weekend.
As expected, the result has already reignited the rivalry between Chelsea and Manchester United supporters, with Blues fans quickly turning the spotlight toward United’s midfield recruitment.
Before the season began, some Manchester United supporters had questioned Chelsea’s decision to part ways with players such as Andrey Santos, with the midfielder eventually moving to United in a deal worth around £50 million. The transfer reportedly includes £48 million guaranteed, with a further £2 million available through performance-related bonuses.
After United struggled to control the game against Hull, Chelsea fans immediately seized the opportunity to remind their rivals of the criticism surrounding Santos and other players previously dismissed as “average.”
However, there is an obvious twist to the story. Santos himself endured a difficult Premier League debut and was unable to provide the kind of commanding midfield performance United needed. Both he and Youri Tielemans were taken off after 67 minutes as Carrick attempted to change the direction of the game.
United controlled large portions of possession but lacked the creativity and attacking sharpness required to turn that dominance into goals. Their problems became even more obvious when Hull punished them from set pieces, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy finding the net to secure a memorable victory for the Tigers.
That result has given Chelsea supporters plenty of ammunition. The situation is a reminder that transfer debates can quickly change once players step onto the pitch. A footballer can be labelled overrated or average before establishing himself, only for circumstances to prove otherwise later in the season.
Santos is still just 22 years old and has clearly been viewed as a major prospect, considering the significant investment United made to bring him to Old Trafford. His first outing, however, offered little evidence that he has already solved United’s midfield problems.
For now, the £50 million price tag will continue to attract attention, especially after such a disappointing team performance. United’s midfield was expected to be one of the areas strengthened during the summer, yet Hull exposed several weaknesses and made Carrick’s side look vulnerable.
The defeat was also historic for Hull. The Tigers secured their first-ever Premier League victory over Manchester United and recorded their first league win against the Red Devils in 52 years.
Chelsea fans, therefore, have every reason to enjoy the banter for now. The debate over whether United made the right investment in Santos will not be settled after one match, but his difficult debut has certainly given rival supporters plenty to talk about.
United still have an entire season to prove the doubters wrong, but after such a disappointing opening day, their midfield already has plenty of questions to answer.
