It’s not every day that a Chelsea legend gives Manchester United credit, but John Obi Mikel believes the Red Devils may have pulled off one of the smartest deals of the transfer window. The former Blues midfielder has singled out Youri Tielemans as the standout midfield signing of the summer, admitting that it “pains” him to praise United.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel was particularly impressed by the reported £35 million price tag for the Belgian midfielder. He labelled the transfer a bargain, pointing to Tielemans’ ability to play in several midfield roles. The experienced midfielder can operate as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box No. 8 or further forward as a creative playmaker.
Mikel also praised Tielemans’ composure, intelligence and ability to control the rhythm of a game. His eye for important goals, movement into the box and quality from set pieces were also highlighted. While the Belgian may not possess blistering speed, Mikel believes his understanding of the game more than compensates for that weakness.
With several seasons of Premier League experience behind him, Tielemans brings technical quality, leadership and versatility to Old Trafford. His arrival could provide Michael Carrick with greater balance and flexibility in midfield as Manchester United prepare for a demanding domestic and European campaign.
