Michael Carrick reportedly makes HUGE tactical decision at Manchester United as 21-year-old continues to shine in attacking role
Patrick Dorgu joined Manchester United with a reputation as an energetic and attack-minded wing-back, but Michael Carrick appears to have identified another position where the Danish youngster could make an even bigger impact. The United boss is reportedly impressed with Dorgu’s attacking ability and has increasingly pushed the 21-year-old into a more advanced role on the left side of the attack within his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
The change in position seems to have brought out some of Dorgu’s best qualities. Rather than being primarily concerned with defensive duties, he has been encouraged to take on opponents, make aggressive runs into the penalty area and apply pressure high up the pitch. His performances in the role during 2026 have reportedly improved significantly, with goals against Manchester City and Arsenal adding further weight to the argument that he could eventually establish himself as a regular left winger.
Carrick’s decision to continue using Dorgu further forward during pre-season is another indication that the tactical adjustment may be part of a bigger plan rather than a temporary experiment. Although there has been no official indication that Dorgu has permanently moved away from the wing-back position, his explosive pace, willingness to dribble directly at defenders and natural attacking instincts could make him a more dangerous player when given the freedom to operate higher up the pitch.
However, Manchester United are unlikely to completely abandon Dorgu’s versatility. His physical strength, energy and ability to cover ground allow him to operate effectively in several positions, meaning Carrick could still rely on him at left-back or wing-back when circumstances demand it. That flexibility could prove particularly valuable throughout a long season, while his development as an attacking player could give United another exciting option on the left flank.
