International football can offer full-backs a unique setup, with more defined responsibilities, quicker transitions, and spaces that better suit their style. If he appeared more composed and effective against Brazil, it may have come down to tactical flexibility, confidence, or simply playing in a system that highlights his strengths. Of course, the joking theory about “maybe it’s the bald head” still refuses to go away. 😄
The comparison between Matheus Cunha and Igor Thiago also sparked discussion. While substitutions can sometimes send a message, they don’t always paint the full picture. If Cunha’s introduction gave Brazil more energy in attack, sharper pressing, or stronger link-up play, it naturally strengthens his argument for more minutes. That said, managers often make changes based on how the game is unfolding, not necessarily because one player is definitively ahead of another. Even so, if that trend continues, Cunha’s case for a bigger role becomes harder to ignore.
The bigger issue, however, is Brazil’s status as serious World Cup challengers.
