Liverpool F.C. travelled to Old Trafford for a Premier League showdown against Manchester United F.C. earlier today, aiming to secure a positive result away from home, but they eventually left empty-handed after a dramatic 3–2 defeat in an intense contest.
The game started in the worst possible way for the visitors. Manchester United F.C. took the lead as early as the 6th minute when Matheus Cunha’s effort took a deflection that wrong-footed the goalkeeper and found the net. That early setback immediately put Liverpool on the defensive, and their problems deepened in the 14th minute when Benjamin Šeško doubled United’s advantage with another well-taken finish.
Arne Slot’s team looked unsettled at the back, struggling to cope with the pace and directness of United’s attacks. The first half continued to tilt in the hosts’ favour, and by the time the whistle went for the interval, Liverpool F.C. were two goals down and facing an uphill battle to salvage anything from the match.
The second half, however, brought a completely different energy from the visitors. Within two minutes of the restart, Dominik Szoboszlai struck in the 47th minute to pull one back and inject belief into Liverpool’s performance. The goal shifted momentum noticeably, with Liverpool F.C. beginning to play with more urgency and control in possession.
That improvement was rewarded again in the 56th minute when Cody Gakpo, of Liverpool F.C., calmly finished to bring the game level. At that point, the comeback was complete, and Liverpool looked the more likely side to go on and win it as they pushed forward with confidence.
Still, the match took another decisive twist in the 77th minute. Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United F.C. stepped up with a crucial goal that restored the home side’s lead. That strike proved to be the winner, as Liverpool F.C. were unable to find another response in the closing stages despite their efforts.
Individually, Liverpool’s goalkeeper had a mixed outing, producing one important save but still conceding three times. In defence, Curtis Jones worked hard on the right side, showing discipline and effort both defensively and going forward. However, the central pairing of Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk struggled to fully contain United’s attacking movement, even though both made a few key interventions. Andy Robertson on the left showed energy and commitment but lacked precision in the final third.
In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch delivered one of Liverpool’s more complete performances, while Alexis Mac Allister helped maintain structure and link play without making a decisive impact on the scoreline. Jeremie Frimpong added attacking intent from wide areas, showing good movement and passing, though his final delivery often fell short.
Szoboszlai stood out as Liverpool F.C.’s brightest performer, contributing a goal and an assist while constantly driving the team forward. Florian Wirtz showed flashes of technical quality but struggled to influence the game consistently, while Gakpo remained a lively threat throughout and got his name on the scoresheet.
From the bench, Milos Kerkez provided a brief but encouraging cameo, helping create a promising moment in the final third, though it was not enough to change the outcome.
