Manchester United are preparing for a major rebuild this summer, with reports suggesting as many as nine players could leave Old Trafford as the club looks to reshape the squad ahead of next season. The planned changes are expected to focus heavily on midfield, where several new arrivals could be brought in once outgoing transfers are completed.
Strengthening the centre of the pitch has become a top priority. Casemiro is expected to move on when his contract ends later this year, closing the chapter on his spell in Manchester after two seasons. His departure would leave United needing a midfielder who can offer leadership, defensive security, and the physical qualities required in the Premier League.
There are also doubts over the future of Manuel Ugarte, who has found it difficult to make a lasting impact since joining the club. United are reportedly willing to listen to offers, and if he leaves, the need for more than one midfield signing would become even greater.
Other exits are also being considered as contracts and loan arrangements near their end. Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are both expected to depart, with no signs of renewal talks. Their exits would help trim the squad and create room for fresh additions.
Rasmus Højlund could also be on his way out permanently. Napoli are believed to have an agreement worth £38 million that becomes active if they secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League. With only a few points needed from their remaining matches, that deal could soon be triggered.
The future of Marcus Rashford remains unresolved. Currently on loan at Barcelona, the Spanish side hold an option to buy him permanently. However, another temporary deal is also possible if finances prevent a full transfer.
United may also make changes in goal. Andre Onana is reportedly attracting interest from Trabzonspor, where he is currently on loan, while Altay Bayındır is also being linked with a move away. If both goalkeepers leave, the club would need at least one new signing in that position.
Joshua Zirkzee is another player whose future is uncertain. A return to Italy has been mentioned, with United open to selling if it allows them to strengthen elsewhere in attack.
The recruitment department is already exploring replacements. Elliot Anderson has been mentioned as a leading option, though Nottingham Forest are expected to demand a huge fee. Other names linked include Aurélien Tchouaméni, Carlos Baleba, and Sandro Tonali.
The club are also targeting reinforcements out wide, with Morgan Rogers and Yan Diomande among the names under consideration.
At the back, however, immediate changes appear less urgent. Interim boss Michael Carrick is believed to be satisfied with the current defensive options, especially with young talents such as Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro progressing well.
Carrick’s own future remains undecided, and the managerial situation could play a key role in determining how the squad is ultimately rebuilt. What is clear, though, is that United are preparing for one of their biggest summer shake-ups in recent years as they aim to build a stronger, more balanced side capable of competing again at the highest level.
