Manchester United are set for a major squad revamp this summer, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe approving the sale of multiple players to create space for five marquee signings. Manager Ruben Amorim is spearheading the overhaul alongside technical director Jason Wilcox and recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, with the primary objective being the acquisition of a top-class striker to bolster the team’s attack.
The Red Devils have endured a lackluster campaign in front of goal, netting just 37 times in 29 Premier League matches—a tally worse than struggling Wolves and significantly behind title contenders Liverpool. To address this, United have identified several striking options, with Victor Osimhen emerging as Amorim’s preferred choice. The Napoli frontman, who has amassed 140 career goals across Belgium, France, Italy, and Turkey, is set for a move this summer, with a reduced €75m release clause making him an attractive option.
United’s pursuit of Osimhen received a boost as PSG—previously regarded as frontrunners—have dropped out of the race. Manager Luis Enrique is reportedly content with his current attacking options, leaving Chelsea as United’s primary competitor for the Nigerian international. However, reports suggest that if United act swiftly, they could have a clear path to securing his signature.
Amid speculation surrounding a potential swap deal, United were initially linked with offering players such as Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, or Joshua Zirkzee in exchange for Osimhen. However, journalist David Ornstein has dismissed the idea of Hojlund being included in any trade, as United still view him as a long-term project despite his struggles in front of goal. Having endured a 20-game scoring drought, the Danish forward has faced criticism, but United remain reluctant to offload him, given their significant £70m investment.
To raise funds for new signings while staying compliant with Premier League financial regulations, United are planning a series of exits. Marcus Rashford has attracted interest from Aston Villa, while Jadon Sancho is expected to depart permanently after his loan spell, with Chelsea reportedly obligated to buy. Antony’s future remains uncertain despite rediscovering form at Real Betis, while veteran players such as Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton, Christian Eriksen, and Victor Lindelof are also on the list of potential departures.
As part of their rebuild, United have drawn up a shortlist of alternative striking options should the pursuit of Osimhen prove unsuccessful. Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, who has notched 40 goals this season, is a strong candidate, alongside Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, both of whom have been in prolific form.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Manchester United’s plans remain fluid, but the club’s ambition is clear—revamping the squad to align with Amorim’s tactical vision while securing elite reinforcements to restore their competitive edge.
