Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Ruben Amorim is already facing a major challenge with Manchester United’s £72 million star. According to Ferdinand, the current United manager may have to make tough decisions regarding this high-profile player early in his tenure.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes incoming manager Rúben Amorim could already be facing a significant challenge regarding Rasmus Højlund and the club’s striker situation. Amorim has reportedly been chosen to replace Erik ten Hag, following extended negotiations with Sporting Lisbon. However, his official takeover is expected to happen on November 11 after completing his remaining matches with the Portuguese club.

One of Amorim’s key tasks will be to revitalize a United squad that has struggled in front of goal, scoring just eight times in nine Premier League matches. Only Crystal Palace and bottom-placed Southampton have found the net fewer times this season. Højlund, who joined the club from Atalanta for £72 million in 2023, had an impressive debut campaign with 16 goals in 43 appearances. However, injuries have hindered his contributions this season, limiting him to 390 minutes of action. Despite his setbacks, he recently managed to score in United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford.

Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube channel, suggested that Højlund could thrive under Amorim’s system, referencing the manager’s impressive work with Viktor Gyökeres at Sporting. However, he also speculated that Amorim might consider bringing Gyökeres to Old Trafford, given the Swedish striker’s outstanding record of 59 goals and 19 assists since his move from Coventry. If that happens, it could create uncertainty around Højlund’s role in the team.

Ferdinand emphasized that United’s attacking situation presents a major dilemma, stating, “It’s going to be a big issue. Big, big decisions to be made over the coming months.” The prospect of Gyökeres arriving could add an extra layer of competition up front, raising questions about whether United would invest in another top striker so soon after signing Højlund. If Amorim is indeed set to take charge, how he handles this potential selection headache will be crucial to United’s attacking fortunes.
