Man Utd fans spot Joshua Zirkzee’s worrying Instagram activity amid rumours he will leave the club in January
Manchester United fans have recently picked up on Joshua Zirkzee’s Instagram activity amidst growing rumors of his possible exit from the club.
The 23-year-old striker moved from Bologna to Manchester United during the summer transfer window, with the transfer reportedly costing the club £36.5 million. Zirkzee made an immediate impact at Old Trafford by scoring in his Premier League debut against Fulham. However, his form has dipped since then, as he has now gone ten consecutive matches without finding the back of the net. As a result, speculation is mounting that he could seek a move away as early as January, just half a year after his arrival.
According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo from Calciomercato, Zirkzee might be open to a return to Serie A if his situation in Manchester doesn’t improve.
Adding fuel to the rumors, fans noticed Zirkzee had ‘liked’ a humorous video on Instagram that mocked his playing style, particularly his habit of dropping deeper into midfield rather than staying forward as a traditional striker. The video creator impersonated Zirkzee, showing how the forward often vacates his attacking position, which has been a point of criticism.
When Zirkzee first joined United, he addressed this aspect of his game, stating, “I tend to drop into midfield sometimes, but it’s not for my own sake; it’s for the team. I consider myself a false striker—neither a No. 9 nor a No. 10. I’d say I’m a 9.5! That’s how I play. I might be different, but isn’t that a good thing?”
Paul Merson, a former Arsenal and England player, shared his thoughts on Zirkzee’s struggles, saying, “Zirkzee performed well at Bologna, but playing for Manchester United is a whole different challenge. The pressure at this club is immense. If you miss opportunities or don’t even get them, it becomes a talking point. Where exactly does he fit in? With players like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund, he’s facing tough competition for a place in the front three.”
