Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has said he would balance new job as Plymouth Argyle manager with European Championship responsibilities.
Four months after being stripped of his responsibilities as Birmingham City head coach, the former United striker returned to management. Although surprised by his employment at St Andrew’s, Rooney was ousted after just 83 days in command.
He dropped out of the dugout and has been in the studio as a commentator for Sky Sports and most lately BBC for United’s FA Cup victory over rivals Manchester City. He will be assigned to keep Argyle’s Championship title, nevertheless, as Ian Foster was terminated during their season of relegation.
“It’s incredibly hectic; every day now is a working day if you like whether that’s here or with the children and obviously, I have certain duties with the European Championships,” he said Argyle TV.
“Every day is ultimately set to bring players in, collaborating with the coaches on our preferred style of play and preparing for pre-season training.
“Although the hectic month excites me, pre-season and truly getting to work with the guys excites me.”
Following periods with Derby County, DC United, and the Midlands club, Home Park will be the fourth place Rooney’s management career calls. Following his recent Championship tenure, the 38-year-old will still be under pressure in the hotseat; yet, Rooney thinks his relocation to the Southwest of England is the “right step”.
“I become rather enthusiastic. Clearly, going in as Argyle’s new head coach was a more extensive process including several managers interviewed for the position, and fortunately the club decided I was the greatest fit for the position.” remarked the United icon.
“I’m thrilled to start and meet the players, meet the staff, and obviously a lot of work over the next month until we start pre-season.”
