When Chelsea blew his prediction for their FA Cup fourth-round match with Aston Villa, Paul Merson had to come clean and take the blame.
He thought that Villa would make it to the fifth round of the FA Cup if they beat Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Before the game at Villa Park, he wrote for Sky Sports, “It was bad against Liverpool, but it got worse against Wolves.” Chelsea should not be able to lose 4–2 at home, no offence to Wolves.
“I don’t think Chelsea has a chance on Wednesday night. That’s not possible. When was the last time, as a Chelsea fan, I said something like that?
“Just a few years ago, the other team would never beat Chelsea.” If they won that game, everyone would be shocked.
Merson’s statement didn’t come true, though, as Chelsea beat Villa 3-1 to knock them out of the competition. The pundit has now walked back what he said in a post-match comment on X.
On Thursday, he wrote on his account, “What a win, Chelsea. I didn’t see that coming at all, which is why I no longer bet.
Many people think Chelsea’s game against Villa was one of their best this season. Let’s hope they keep up that level of energy and competition for the rest of the season.
