After Chelsea’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Mauricio Pochettino refused to blame the match officials.
The Blues trailed at halftime thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley, while Dominik Szoboszlai added a third for the hosts shortly after the break. Christopher Nkunku briefly gave Chelsea hope but Luis Diaz scored in the 79th minute, ending any hopes of an incredible comeback.
The outcome may have been comprehensive, but it was not without controversy, with Chelsea denied two penalty claims. Neither were awarded by VAR, but Pochettino was hesitant to assign responsibility after the match.
He stated, “It is not a definitive excuse. They deserved to win. They were better than us. But I don’t want to talk about it because it is part of football. They outperformed us right away. In this type of game, you have to say “well done Liverpool.”
The Argentine went on: “They were better at it than us. It was tough for us to communicate and play. We lost the ball so easily. When we say they compete better, it means they outperformed us in those areas.
“In the second half of the game, at 2-0, we create an opportunity for Mudryk, and if we score, we may gain confidence and improve our performance. Even if we scored and drew, we would be upset since we did not perform well.”
The meeting at Anfield on Wednesday night served as a warm-up for next month’s Carabao Cup final, which will be played at Wembley Stadium.
Pochettino cautioned the Blues that if they want to win the Cup ahead of their opponents, they must dramatically improve their game before the rematch. He did, however, emphasise that it would be a different contest away from Anfield.
He went on to say, “It will undoubtedly be different in a neutral environment. Of course, that is the sensation. It is fantastic because we want to compete. And if we compete in the same way we do now, the results will be the same. If we don’t improve, it will be difficult. For us, it is about learning in this type of game. We were competing against a top-ranked squad. It’s wonderful to feel like we need to improve.”
