Chelsea were denied two penalties in their 4-1 defeat by Liverpool on Wednesday, leaving Mauricio Pochettino to rue refereeing decisions as well as his team’s poor performance. The Blues were soundly defeated following a dreadful first half, but things could have been very different.
Paul Tierney not only booked Ben Chilwell for diving before halftime, which was the proper call, but he also failed to penalise Virgil van Dijk for a tackle on Conor Gallagher earlier in the match. VAR did review the challenge, in which Van Dijk’s knee collided with the Englishman just beyond the six-yard box.
The Reds were fortunate to get away with the decision, as Joe Cole expressed his thoughts on the event. “Sterling goes into the box, Gallagher takes a lovely touch, and Van Dijk just squares himself off, and I think he just leans into him there,” remarked the former Chelsea and Liverpool star.
“To me, that is a penalty. In front of the Kop in the first ten minutes, I believe the referee was not daring.”
Chelsea were swiftly punished for their lack of effort, as Diogo Jota opened the score. Connor Bradley increased the lead before Darwin Nunez was given the opportunity to make it 3-0 from the spot himself. Tierney gave Liverpool the benefit of the doubt when he called a foul on Jota by Benoit Badiashile that could not be contested.
“It’s a great ball from Joe Gomez and then you see it in slow motion, he steps on his foot and with VAR you get those decisions,” Rio Ferdinand went on to say. “But Chelsea has been really sloppy and slow with everything. You’d think they’d have settled it here with a goal, but it’s just not falling for Nunez right now!”
Nunez hit the post for his penalty, one of four times he found the woodwork rather than the net, but Pochettino’s situation worsened after halftime. Dominik Szoboszlai headed in to seal the victory midway through the second half.
Chelsea did score a consolation goal through Christopher Nkunku, and it looked like they would be able to reduce the gap to one goal when the Frenchman appeared to be fouled inside the area seconds later. “Has van Dijk kicked through him?” Ally McCoist asked during commentary. “He does, you know!
“I’ll tell you right now: he does, and that’s a punishment. I believe there is a penalty; he catches him with his right leg. You saw Van Dijk’s contact there, and it’s a penalty all day. He catches his right leg, without a doubt.”
John Brooks reviewed the situation again, but no action was taken, much to Pochettino’s chagrin. The 51-year-old was enraged on the bench, shouting at the fourth official during the sequence that followed the tackle.
McCoist went on to say that Liverpool deserved to win, despite the fact that the officials had dealt Chelsea a bad hand. For Pochettino, the result leaves his team in mid-table.
Despite starting the week with the potential to finish eighth, the Blues could wind up in the bottom half. They’ve now lost six of their past seven away games.
