Kalvin Phillips has just become the most hated player in the Premier League after leaving Manchester City to join premier league rivals!
Kalvin Phillips has only played 19 minutes of Premier League football since September, which is an insufficient preparation for Euro 2024. It comes as no surprise that he is poised to leave Manchester City this month, having started only two of his ten games this season.
In fact, he has only started six of the 31 games he has played since his arrival in 2022. Phillips came in to push Rodri for his spot, but the Spaniard has risen to become the world’s best defensive midfielder.
Even while Rodri has been out, Pep Guardiola has scarcely used him. He has refused to rule out Phillips leaving in January, despite the fact that his last appearance was in the Club World Cup semi-final win against Urawa Red Diamonds almost a month ago.
Phillips-interested clubs
Newcastle has been linked with a move for the midfielder, with Sandro Tonali now serving a 10-month betting suspension. The Magpies are constrained by Financial Fair Play issues, so a move is not guaranteed.
According to the most recent reports, Tottenham has entered the battle for the midfielder, with Crystal Palace and Fulham also being mentioned as potential suitors. Juventus has been linked for a long time before withdrawing from the race.
Loan or permanent departure?
Unless an enticing offer is made, a loan is most likely. Phillips has four and a half years left on his contract and would want a high cost in the summer when clubs may have more money to spend. That option would be more tempting to Newcastle, who are aware of FFP and expect Tonali to return in August. City, on the other hand, are likely to demand a loan fee for the 28-year-old, which might influence clubs’ selections.
What Phillips has said about his plans for the future
“He (Gareth Southgate) just says for me to keep my spot I’ve got to be playing games and that’s what I want to do,” Phillips stated while on England duty in October. I agreed with Gareth on this, and I know I need to be playing games.
“I need to compete every single week, and that’s something I’ll have to decide on in the coming months.” Obviously, it’s huge; as a football player, especially one as competitive as myself, I want to play as much as possible.
“Over the last year-and-a-half I’ve not been able to do that due to injuries and etcetera so obviously it’s something that I’m going to have to think about and hopefully my chance does come but if it doesn’t then I’ve got to make other decisions as well.”
Guardiola’s comments about Phillips’ future
In December, when asked about a transfer update, Guardiola stated, “Kalvin is a player with us, I don’t want to anticipate absolutely anything.” Everyone is aware of his predicament. It is dependent on whether or not it occurs. If this occurs, we will discuss it. The market in January is difficult… We still have fantastic things to play for after we make our decision.”
He had stated a month before, “The last word belongs to the club.” If he decides to go, then leave. If the deal is not followed, he will remain. He’s acting fantastically. To be honest, he’s one of the most giving players I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure what will happen with Kalvin because nobody knows when the transfer window is open.”
