Chelsea finished 2023 with a 3-2 win over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road in the Premier League on Saturday, making it two wins in a row.
Cole Palmer’s strong start to life in west London continued with two well-taken goals either side of half-time. Noni Madueke added to his previous goal against Crystal Palace with a superb strike past Thomas Kaminski.
Luton Town showed character in the final stages of the game, scoring twice through Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo and hitting Djordje Petrovic’s crossbar twice.
The victory moves the Blues into fourth place, just nine points behind Manchester City. Despite the energetic performance, seasoned defender Thiago Silva did not appear pleased with the final whistle.
After Luton pushed the west Londoners to the finish line at Kenilworth Road, the Brazilian was seen shaking his head on the halfway line. He was also spotted arguing with Enzo Fernandez about something after instructing the TNT Sports camera team to back off.
It’s unclear what irritated the 39-year-old, but the fact that Chelsea let Luton back into the game with two soft goals after rushing out to a 3-0 lead could have something to do with it.
Madueke thanked his teammates after the game for holding on to all three points. “I felt like it was staying together in those last few moments,” he explained to TNT Sports.
“It’s a difficult place to come, to be fair, we made it difficult for ourselves, and I’m just glad we got three points.” They have made life difficult for many of the best teams this season, therefore I am delighted with the three points.”
