“He can leave during the next transfer window, he’s not needed anymore. He was a good player but now he’s just a bench warming flop” – Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is approving the exit of one of their key first-team players for a fee of only €50million

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been chastised by Jamie Carragher for making a “mess” of trying to transfer the club’s “best player this season,” Conor Gallagher, who is now in discussions with Tottenham.

Since taking over as Chelsea chairman ahead of the summer 2022 transfer window, Boehly has made some significant decisions. The club has spent £1 billion in three windows under his supervision.

Major investments have yet to produce anything approximating a good season.
Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League last season and are presently 10th.

While the owner has definitely brought in quality players, the excessive spending has forced him to part ways with some significant assets.

Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Mason Mount have all left the club since Boehly arrived.

Three of those players came via Chelsea’s youth system, and selling them results in an instant profit on the books, which helps the club stay in compliance with Financial FairPlay requirements.

However, letting them go has changed the DNA of the team, with few loyal Chelsea men remaining.

Carragher criticises Chelsea for the Gallagher decision
Gallagher might be the next academy player to leave. He’s been on Tottenham’s radar for some time, and it was recently rumoured that ‘negotiations are beginning’ for a move to north London.

Former Premier League defender Carragher believes the move would highlight the issues caused by Boehly at the club.

Responding to a post on X about advanced talks for Gallagher’s transfer to Tottenham, the pundit argued the Blues are wrong to trade one of their finest players for financial reasons.

Gallagher, along with Cole Palmer, has been Chelsea’s finest player this season, demonstrating “what a mess the new ownership has made at the club,” Carragher stated.

“Selling an academy player because it helps with FFP.”

Gallagher’s selling is a mistake for several reasons.
Not only would selling Gallagher result in the club losing a player who is a Chelsea through and through, having come through the academy and captained the club, but it would also benefit a direct opponent.

Tottenham are already far ahead of the Blues, and signing Gallagher might widen the margin even further.

If Chelsea is to be successful at any stage, maintaining key players who care about the club appears to be a no-brainer.
