Gabby Agbonlahor, a former Aston Villa striker, has urged Manchester City to sign the ‘next best’ player to Saudi Pro League target Kevin De Bruyne, despite the midfielder being “irreplaceable” for the club.
Saudi officials are said to have approached De Bruyne about a move to the Middle East in 2024, with the Belgian set to leave The Etihad 12 months later.
As we reported on Monday, the five-time Premier League winner makes £400,000 per week at City and would earn significantly more if he followed some of the game’s biggest players to Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, City have long been interested in Bayern Munich player Jamal Musiala, who is now negotiating a new contract with the Bavarian giants.
But, according to Football Insider, if he doesn’t get regular game time in the coming months, the youthful striker will push for a January exit, alerting both City and Liverpool.
The former Chelsea youngster is under contract until 2026 but has not always been a first-choice starter in Munich under Thomas Tuchel.
While Agbonlahor concedes that finding a replacement for De Bruyne would be nearly impossible, he believes Musiala would be a wise signing.
“De Bruyne is one player you can never replace,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. What he can accomplish with a football is mind-boggling.
“Take a look at them now; they’re not the same team. Haaland isn’t the same player since he doesn’t get the service that De Bruyne does.
“He’s irreplaceable, but you go out and find the next best in class.”
“Musiala isn’t going to win the Ballon d’Or at Bayern, so he’ll want to see what he can do under a manager like Pep and with a striker like Haaland.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me to see City go out and get the next best – and that is Musiala.”
City, without the injured De Bruyne, will return to Champions League play on Tuesday evening when they visit Young Boys.
