Manchester City will be concerned about midfielder Rodri’s fitness after the Spaniard suffered an injury in the Club World Cup final against Fluminense.
During the second half of the game in Jeddah, Rodri collapsed in pain after being challenged by opponent player Alexsander. He tried to continue, but City opted not to take any more chances with the game already won.
When the injury occurred, Pep Guardiola’s club was already three goals up. Julian Alvarez scored in the first minute, Nino scored an own goal, and Phil Foden scored City’s third.
Rodri has been an important player for City since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2019. He scored the game-winning goal in the Champions League final, and Guardiola’s club has struggled when he has been absent this season.
City’s three Premier League defeats this season have occurred in games that the 27-year-old has been absent from. They were defeated by Wolves and Arsenal when he was serving a red card suspension for a dismissal against Nottingham Forest, and they were defeated by Aston Villa while Rodri was suspended for accumulation of yellow cards.
The game against Fluminense was almost gone by the time he was replaced by Manuel Akanji, but City still had time to add a fourth. It was Alvarez again, this time dipping his shoulder and blasting low past custodian Fabio.
Erling Haaland, City’s leading scorer, has already been ruled out of both Club World Cup games. The Norwegian has missed City’s past two Premier League games due to injury, as well as the semi-final win over Urawa Reds and the final against South American champions Fluminense.
After a game against Brentford was postponed to allow them to go to Saudi Arabia, the Premier League champions will return to domestic action against Everton on December 27. City, who have been without midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for the majority of the season, will wait to see if Rodri is fit to participate.
The game against Everton is followed by a match against struggling Sheffield United on December 30. However, that will be City’s last league game until January 13, with the FA Cup third round tie against Huddersfield Town taking place in the meantime.
