After being found guilty of breaking Financial Fair Play rules, the Premier League said on Friday that Everton would lose 10 points. The players for Sean Dyche plan to appeal. Right now, they are 14th in the table, but if they lose, they will be 19th.
Now everyone is looking at Manchester City, who got 115 charges in February. City is currently in a title race with Liverpool, Arsenal, and other teams. They have strongly denied the claims and said they welcome the probe.
This is not the first time that City’s money has been talked about. In 2020, Pep Guardiola’s team was facing a two-year ban from European football after UEFA found that they had seriously broken FFP rules. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned the ban and lowered the club’s fine from €30million (£26million) to €10million (£9million).
Before the ban was lifted, Kevin De Bruyne, a star player for City, said that being banned from European football could affect his future at the Etihad Stadium. “I’m just waiting,” De Bruyne told the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
“The club said they were going to appeal, and they’re pretty sure they’re right.” I’m waiting to see what will happen because of this. I believe in my team.
“I will look over everything once the choice has been made.” It would be too long to wait two years, but I could see if it took one year.
If City is found guilty, they could lose a lot of points. De Bruyne’s old words show that not all players would stay with the team in that situation, especially if they were relegated, which is something that financial expert Stefan Borson said could happen. Borson, a lawyer who used to work for City, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I don’t see the judgement or award, but -10 points for Everton seems harsh for a simple FFP breach to me.”
“But reinforces that sanctions against City (if proven) and now Chelsea (if charged and admitted on the off-books payments) will be potentially relegation inducing.”
