Union Berlin has banned Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana following a management conflict and separate training.
Union Berlin have suspended Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana for his outburst after being substituted in the team’s Champions League defeat to Napoli.
The 20-year-old, who failed to score or assist for the German side yet again, was substituted in the 70th minute of Tuesday’s 1-0 home loss to the Italian champions.
As he walked by manager Urs Fischer, he declined to shake the head coach’s outstretched hand or even make eye contact, and the two briefly collided.
At one point on the bench, Fofana appeared to be in tears, and a number of players and personnel, including sporting director Oliver Ruhnert, attempted to console him.
The kid, who went to Stamford Bridge from Molde last January, tendered an apology the next day, but Union Berlin still chastised him.
Fofana has been given a one-week suspension for his outburst after being substituted and will not be considered for selection against Werder Bremen this weekend or against Stuttgart in the German Cup on Tuesday.
He will also practice separately from the first-team squad during his ban, returning to team training on Wednesday, November 1.
Union Berlin spokesperson Christian Arbeit confirmed the decision to penalize Fofana, with manager Fischer explaining: ‘Football is a team sport, you have to fit in and occasionally put yourself second. We hope he takes something away from this.’
‘Following my behavior during my exit from the field, I wanted to apologise to the club, the coach, my team-mates, and the spectators,’ Fofana wrote on social media on Wednesday.
This action was not meant and in no way represents my attitude; it was the result of exasperation since I wanted to continue assisting the team in achieving a positive outcome.
‘We will keep working and will return even stronger in the championship and in this tremendous tournament.’
Fofana’s suspension adds to his poor start to his loan term in Berlin, as the attacker has now gone 11 games – and 567 minutes of action – without scoring or assisting for his loan side.
