Gareth Southgate discusses Raheem Sterling’s absence from the England squad for the second time in a row.
For the second time in a row, Raheem Sterling has been left out of England’s team for the forthcoming October international break.
Because Sterling was performing so well for Chelsea, his absence from the September games was even more of a scandal. It’s less of a story now that he’s been dropped from Mauricio Pochettino’s first team.
But leaving out such an experienced player with so many England caps is always going to be a topic, and Southgate had to address that today while speaking to the press:
“We spoke before the last squad, and we’ve been happy with the wide players’ performances in particular in the last four games, and in the two in March,” Southgate stated, according to Daily Mail quotes.
“The team is playing really well, and there is clearly some stability there.”
“We have added Jarrod Bowen in those wide areas, he’s scored five in seven games and is playing really well and with the Australia game as well there’s the opportunity to learn some different things as well.”
Southgate appears to be content with the alternatives he has at the moment, and it’s difficult to see Sterling changing that unless he returns to Pochettino’s team on a regular basis and returns to the form he showed in the early weeks of the season.
