This is What Manchester City fans chanted at Kalvin Phillips in the 83rd minute against Red Star Belgrade

Pep Guardiola gave Kalvin Phillips a rare chance to play in the dying minutes of Manchester City’s 3-1 win in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

The England international was given seven minutes of play to assist Red Star Belgrade seal the victory, and he was serenaded by the fans as he prepared to come on.

What is the backstory?
Well, the 27-year-old has had a terrible time recently.

Guardiola has left Phillips on the bench in four of the five Premier League games this season, giving his No.4 only six minutes of play in the 5-1 victory against Fulham.

The £45m man never seems to let it bother him, but just in case he was feeling bad, Manchester City fans tried to cheer him up with a song.

As Phillips prepared to enter the game in the 83rd minute, he was greeted by cries of “Kalvin Phillips, he’s top of the league” from the Etihad Stadium faithful, as Manchester City secured first place in Group G while also holding first place in the Premier League after a perfect start to the season.

After that chant was repeated, RB Leipzig eventually tied Manchester City for first place in Group G on goal difference, but it was still good to see Phillips receive a warm reception from the supporters despite his lack of game time.

Kalvin Phillips is an unsung hero of Manchester City.
It’s easy to dismiss the Leeds-born playmaker’s lack of action, but people often overlook the value of competition in a squad at the top level of football.

The very presence of Phillips, in our opinion, is pushing Rodri to his present incredible level of play, as well as bringing forth a big degree of consistency from the Spain international.

There is no assurance that the Manchester City No.16 would be playing to such remarkable standards on a weekly basis without the Yorkshire Pirlo, as Leeds United fans dubbed him.
