Manchester United are reportedly considering an audacious move to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, with the club said to be willing to pay around £60 million to re-sign the midfielder from Napoli. The interest reflects a growing sense of regret within United’s hierarchy over the decision to sell the academy graduate, especially after watching him blossom into one of Serie A’s standout performers. United’s current situation has only intensified those feelings. A brutal injury list, combined with the absence of key players due to international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, has left Ruben Amorim with an alarmingly thin squad. As the crisis deepens, many supporters have been left wondering why a dependable, versatile figure like McTominay was allowed to leave in the first place, particularly as his sale was largely driven by the need to balance the books. Since his switch to Naples, the Scottish international has enjoyed a remarkable revival. McTominay has become a central figure in Napoli’s success, playing a major role in their Scudetto triumph and earning the Serie A Player of the Season award. His performances also caught global attention, finishing 18th in the Ballon d’Or rankings. This season, he has maintained that momentum, contributing five goals and three assists, while thriving under the guidance of Antonio Conte. His transformation has only reinforced the view that United badly underestimated the potential of one of their own. According to reports from CaughtOffside, Napoli’s current financial challenges could open the door to a deal. The Italian club is understood to be open to offers in the region of £60 million. While they would ideally prefer to sell in the summer, a sufficiently attractive bid in January could prompt them to rethink their stance. United are not alone in tracking McTominay’s situation. Tottenham, Arsenal, and Newcastle are all said to be keeping a close eye on developments, which could complicate any attempt to bring him back. The question now is whether INEOS and the United board have the resolve to admit their mistake and act decisively, or whether McTominay’s return will remain nothing more than a painful reminder of what the club let slip away during a season already filled with turbulence
