During the current summer transfer window, Manchester United has yet to bolster their midfield, with Frenkie de Jong’s name once again surfacing as a potential target.
Erik ten Hag, who previously managed de Jong at Ajax before the Dutch international’s move to Barcelona, has long been interested in bringing the £86 million midfielder to Old Trafford.
Two years ago, United reached an agreement to acquire the Oranje star from the Catalan club for 80 million euros, but de Jong opted to stay at the Nou Camp.
Now, according to the Spanish outlet *Nacional*, Ten Hag has reportedly proposed a swap deal involving Antony to secure de Jong for Manchester United.
While Antony thrived under Ten Hag at Ajax, his performance in the Premier League has been underwhelming. The Brazilian international, who transferred from the Eredivisie club to United for £86 million, managed only one goal in 29 league appearances last season.
Thus, it is surprising that Ten Hag would consider trading what could be seen as one of the team’s biggest disappointments for de Jong, a key player for Barcelona.
However, it is not unexpected that Barcelona reportedly has little interest in Antony. Despite seeking a winger, the South American doesn’t fit their requirements. The Blaugrana already have Raphinha as an option and the emerging talent of Lamine Yamal on the right wing, both of whom are considered superior to the Old Trafford winger.
Therefore, Manchester United may need to explore alternative strategies to have any realistic chance of signing Frenkie de Jong.
