René Hake, the head coach of Go Ahead Eagles, and Ruud van Nistelrooy are currently in discussions to join Erik ten Hag’s coaching team at Manchester United.
The futures of current assistants Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag, along with forwards coach Benni McCarthy, are uncertain as part of a sweeping overhaul led by Ineos.
Hake and Van Nistelrooy, who have strong managerial credentials and are well-acquainted with Ten Hag, are considered excellent additions. Hake, 52, previously worked with Ten Hag at FC Twente’s academy and both have managed Go Ahead Eagles and Utrecht. The possibility of Van Nistelrooy returning to Old Trafford first surfaced on Monday. These potential new hires come as United is making progress on extending Ten Hag’s contract.
“After our time together at Twente, we’ve always stayed in touch. We meet and call each other, discussing personal matters, family, and, of course, football,” Ten Hag said of Hake to Voetbal International last year. “He was incredibly driven, ambitious, and methodical as a trainer.”
The potential recruitment of Van Nistelrooy raises questions about McCarthy, whose contract expires at the end of the month, and the roles of others like Darren Fletcher. Van der Gaag and McClaren, Ten Hag’s current principal assistants, might see their positions jeopardized if Hake and Van Nistelrooy are hired.
Hake, known as one of Holland’s most promising coaches, led Go Ahead Eagles to a ninth-place finish in the Eredivisie last season. Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 games for United from 2001 to 2006, has been in talks with Burnley about their vacant manager position but reportedly finds the idea of returning to Old Trafford appealing.
Since resigning from PSV Eindhoven with one match left in the 2022-23 Eredivisie season, Van Nistelrooy has been waiting for the right opportunity, citing a lack of support as his reason for leaving.
Manchester United is close to securing a contract extension with Ten Hag, who has 12 months left on his current deal. The extension is expected to be for an additional two years until June 2027, reflecting United’s commitment to long-term stability.
In addition to these backroom changes, United anticipates a busy summer transfer window. A significant departure could be Mason Greenwood, with Marseille’s new head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, initiating talks over a potential transfer.
