Thierry Henry has moved to clear up a prevalent misperception about Manchester City’s football.

Following a spectacular year, Manchester City are now the finest team in England, Europe, and the world.

Pep Guardiola’s squad won the treble last season and has a good chance of winning it again this season, which would be unique.

The Frenchman stated: “People often claim City plays in a 4-3-3.

“No, they don’t. They sometimes defend in a 4-4-2, but never in a 4-3-3. It’s a 3-7!

“At times, it looks like a 3-2-5, but not a 4-3-3. Your shape alters while you’re on the ball.

“What you need to look at is the balance.”

This is what makes City so difficult to beat.
Total Football may be traced back to Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, and, most recently, Guardiola.

The Blues manager continues to innovate and update, but the simple fact that distinguishes his sides is that when they have the ball, they make the pitch large, and when they don’t, they make it small.

To do so successfully, you need players who can play wherever on the pitch, and Guardiola has assembled a roster of them.

Just look at how John Stones has progressed from a centre-back to a fantastic midfielder, how Foden can play anywhere in the attack, and how Bernardo Silva has virtually played everywhere, even left-back.

Only three players on City’s roster have not played in more than one position at least once: striker Haaland, centre-back Ruben Dias, and goalkeeper Ederson.

Even the Brazilian would play in midfield if given the opportunity.

Guardiola has taught his players to always maintain ‘balance’ in order to impose authority, which might manifest itself in unusual formations.

Only when City is knocked off balance by a swift response are they ever in serious peril.
