Borussia Dortmund are unlikely to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent transfer from Manchester United after sporting director Sebastian Kehl stated that it would be too pricey.
Sancho, who had became one of Europe’s top wingers during his first term at Dortmund from 2017 to 2021, returned to Germany on a temporary deal last month after falling out with Erik ten Hag and being frozen out in Manchester.
Sancho has already compared rejoining Dortmund to returning “home” and stated that it was constantly on his mind during his time at United. However, his time in the Bundesliga may be short-lived, with Kehl conceding that the club will not be able to afford to sign him in the summer, similar to Dortmund’s scenario with on-loan Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen.
“Unfortunately for both players, neither option was realistic,” Kehl told Sky Sports Germany.
“If you know what we got for Jadon Sancho two and a half years ago, you know that it might not be very, very difficult,” he said, referring to the £73 million trade to England.

“We naturally advocated for a [permanent] option on him – and also with Ian – but the negotiating position was not such that we could implement it and so we will accept it for now.”
United did not include a buy option in the final transaction, despite the prospect that a return to his former self while at Dortmund would increase his value once more. The club has used a similar method with loan moves in the past, most notably when Alexis Sanchez joined Inter in 2019.
Sancho has not played for United since August, yet he has already played more Bundesliga minutes this season in three weeks than he has in five months in the Premier League. The 23-year-old scored assists in Dortmund’s opening two games against Darmstadt and Koln, but he missed Friday’s draw with Heidenheim due to injury.
